Diabetes management has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, thanks to groundbreaking advancements in technology. Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), insulin delivery devices, and specialized software are revolutionizing the way people with diabetes manage their health. This blog post will outline some recent innovations in the industry and the impact these new technologies are expected to have on the diabetes community.
Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM): Over the Counter Innovations This Summer
One notable trend is the increasing availability of over-the-counter CGMs. Over-the-counter CGMs are important for people with diabetes because they are more accessible, convenient, and flexible, empowering patients to take a more active role in their care and leading to improved health outcomes.
Dexcom's Stelo Glucose Biosensor System, for example, offers a user-friendly and accessible option for individuals seeking to monitor their glucose levels without insurance coverage. In fact, Stelo is the first FDA-cleared glucose biosensor that individuals with Type 2 diabetes can purchase without a prescription. Stelo hit the market on August 26, 2024.
The FDA has also recently given the green light to two new over-the-counter CGMs from Abbott. The first, Lingo, is aimed at individuals who want to enhance their understanding of metabolic health. The second, Libre Rio, is designed for adults with type 2 diabetes who control their condition through diet and physical activity, without insulin.
Insulin Delivery Devices: Pump and CGM Sensor Together
Insulin delivery devices have also witnessed significant advancements. Pharmasens, a Swiss technology company, has introduced the niia signature, a semi-reusable tubeless patch pump and glucose sensor. This innovative device offers a more discreet and comfortable option for insulin delivery, with the potential to be worn for up to five days.
The niia essential, a simpler basal-bolus patch pump from Pharmasens, is currently undergoing FDA approval. While the availability of the niia signature AID system remains to be announced, these developments highlight the ongoing innovation in insulin delivery technology.
In the final week of August, the FDA also cleared Insulet’s Omnipod 5 automated insulin delivery (AID) system, which is the first of its kind for adults with type 2 diabetes. The Omnipod 5 system offers a significant upgrade in diabetes management by delivering up to three days of continuous insulin without the need for needles. It integrates seamlessly with a CGM to manage blood sugar levels, eliminating the need for multiple daily injections and fingersticks.
Software Solutions
Software platforms are vital for integrating and analyzing data from CGMs, insulin pumps, and other diabetes management tools – especially as more are added to the market. SweetSpot, for example, offers a comprehensive solution that empowers healthcare practices to gain deeper insights into their patients’ glycemic health. SweetSpot consolidates data from patients across CGMs and insulin devices, allowing you to easily view all this information in one place, instead of sifting through multiple portals.
The SweetSpot team consists of physicians, endocrinologists, and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists who stay at the forefront of innovations in diabetes technology and they are dedicated to making all data accessible and actionable. As innovations in diabetes technology continue to grow, SweetSpot will keep integrating with even more devices.
